Based in south London, Pointe Black is a Black owned ballet school creating opportunity for Black children and adults to access ballet - an art form famously renowned for its lack of diversity and inclusivity. Fuelled by years of racial discrimination and microaggressions as a young Black ballerina, Pointe Black’s founder and principal, Ruth Essel, felt discouraged to dance and encouraged to teach. Pointe Black provides a safe space for the Black community, allowing them the freedom to be themselves through the enjoyment of ballet.
